So to give the right direction to thier dream, I am going to tell you in a very simple words how you can join the Indian Air Force. I hope that you will get very helpful information from this post. So let’s know which entry or under which exam you are eligible to join the Indian Air Force. I have include all the necessary information and link about the recruitment and exams.

List of Entries / Exams To Join Indian Air Force

1. NDA Entry

First, let’s talk about 10+2 entries. After 10+2, there is only one entry to join the Indian Air Force as an officer. That is NDA entry.

NDA exam is conducted twice a year by UPSC. And through this exam, you can apply for any of the three services of Indian airforce i.e. Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy. But to apply to the Indian Navy or Indian Airforce through NDA, it is compulsory to have Physics and Mathematics in your 10+2. This means that only students of science stream can apply for Indian Airforce through NDA.

Candidate age limit for NDA should be between 16.5 to 19.5 years and only unmarried male candidates can apply for this.

And if we talk about its education qualification, then it is compulsory to have physics and mathematics in 10 + 2. And if you are in 10 + 2, or you have completed 10 + 2, then you can apply for this entry.

The notification of the NDA examination comes twice a year, in the months of December-January and June-July.

2. AFCAT Entry Exam

Now let’s talk about graduation entry. The first entry for graduates is the AFCAT entry. Its full form is the Air Force Common Admission Test.
And this exam is conducted twice a year by the Indian Air Force.

Through the AFCAT exam, you can join different branches of Indian Air force such as Flying Branch, Technical Branch, Ground Duty Branch and many more. Let’s talk about its eligibility criterion.

If you want to apply for the flying branch of Indian Air force through AFCAT, then your age should be between 20 to 24 years.

And apart from this, if you want to apply for any other branch i.e. ground duty branch, then your age limit should be between 20 to 26 years.
Only students of the engineering stream can apply and join for Flying/ Plane branch of Indian Air Force through the AFCAT exam.

If you are in the final year of your engineering, or your engineering is complete, then you can apply for the Flying Branch of Indian Airport through AFCAT. If you are from a non-technical background and you are in the final year of graduation, or your graduation is completed, then you can apply for a non-technical branch of air force i.e. ground duty branch.

But keep in mind, to apply for the AFCAT exam, it is compulsory to have a minimum of 50% marks in graduation. And the unmarried male and unmarried female candidates are eligible for AFCAT entry.

Ground duty/ any other branch Age 20 to 26 years.

3. CDS Entry

So let’s talk about the next entry, which is CDS Entry i.e. CDA Exam. This exam is also conducted twice a year by UPSC, just like the NDA exam. And to apply for air force through CDS, your age limit should be between 20 to 24 years.

If we talk about its education qualification, then graduation degree is compulsory to apply for air force through CDS, as well as Physics and Mathematics in the 12th is also compulsory.
Even for this examination, both unmarried male and unmarried female candidates are eligible.

The notification of the CDS exam comes twice a year in the months of June-July and November-December. To apply for this, you can get more information by going to UPSC official website upsc.gov.in.

4. NCC Special Entry

The next entry is the NCC Special Entry. This is a direct entry that only NCC candidates can apply.

To apply for this, the age limit of the candidate should be between 20 to 24 years. If we talk about its education qualification, for NCC entry, the candidate must have a “C” certificate of the Senior Division of the NCC Air Wing. It is necessary to have Physics and Mathematics subjects in 12th. And it is compulsory to have a minimum of 60% marks in graduation.

Its notification comes in the months of November-December and May-June. And for this also, the unmarried male and unmarried female both candidates are eligible.

5. Meteorology Department –

This is also a direct entry. But for this, only postgraduates can apply. For this, the age limit of the candidate should be between 20 to 26 years.

If we talk about its education qualification, then only those candidates can apply for it, who have done post-graduation with minimum 50% marks from any subject of science stream. For this entry, in addition to post-graduation, it is also compulsory to have physics and mathematics subjects. Also, male and female candidates are eligible for this entry.

What is X And Y group in Air force?

You must have heard this, there are two groups in the Indian Air Force.

X groups are called technical groups and Y groups are called non-technical groups. Students who are from 12th PCM (Physics & Mathematics) can go to X group (technical group) as well as Y group. Those who are from Arts, Agriculture or Commerce or Biology, there will not be Math subject in their 12th, they can go to y group, which is a non-technical group.

  1. Communication Technician – CT handles all types of state-of-the-art resources such as telephone exchange radio equipment, serve and maintain them.
  2. Automobile technician – All vehicle vehicles are maintained by automobile technicians. Driving a crane or truck or other vehicles also comes in it.

Non- Technical post in Y Group –

  1. Admin Assistant – Admin and other work
  2. ACCTS – X assistant
  3. Medical Assistant -Nursery
  4. Logistic Assistant – Logistics
  5. ESSA – Environment service Support Assistance
  6. OPS assistant – Radar and Traffic Control
  7. Metrological Assistant – Weather Related
  8. Ground Training Assistance – PT, Training, etc.
  9. Indian Air force Police
  10. Musician

Post in X Group –

Depending on your performance, the trade is given to you. When your complete your training, then you will be assigned the Trade (duty). You will be taught about the trade for which you will be selected.

  1. Automobile fitter – Maintaining vehicles
  2. Electronic fitter – Airplane, Heavy Vehicle, Radar Maintaining, and other work
  3. Electrical fitter – Light, Electric related
  4. Mechanical system fitter
  5. Structure fitter
  6. Propulsion fitter
  7. Workshop fitter – Smith and mechanical
  8. Weapon fitter
  9. Teacher / Instructor

Salary of X and Y Group

  • During training in the Indian Air Force, you will get 14,600 in-hand salary.
  • After training, the x group gets paid 33,100 + ta da allowance. Overall you get up to 36,000 including ta da allowance.
  • After training, y group gets paid 26,900 + ta da allowance. Overall you get up to 30,000-32,000 including ta da allowance.
  • The salary of the educational instructor is 40,600. The total salary becomes 44,000-45,000 including ta da allowance.

This is the estimated starting payment in the air force. As your experience increases, you also get promotions. And after getting several promotions, you get a good salary. i.e. would be around 70,000-80,000. The Salary payment slab in Group X and Y varies only between 7,000-12,000.
